this self help chit .

Mind=blown on why people bash these books. As far as I’m concerned, ain’t nuthin’ wrong with identifying weaknesses you have and trying to change yourself for the better. It’s a proactive approach that successful, open people take. It’s an approach that seems to be missing in the close-mindedness of self-help’s critics .

back to my pre-nursing school body .

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been saddened over my body image. I’ve gotten way to small for my liking and tbh I’ve never looked worse . Granted, I do feel more energetic and have a nicer stomach and can do more calisthenics, but a part of me still longs for the typical bodybuilder look. So, I looked back to last summer (before I started nursing school, when I had time to eat) and have decided to go back to that diet. Goodbye sweet abs :( Hello bulkier chest and arms? Hopefully, I keep the energy though. I think this time I can do this right. FUAAARK!! Guess I gotta get back to weight gainer shakes. I’m not happy with this, but right now I am way too skinny. The things you gotta do… good night sweet prince.

diabetic recommendations=backward thinking

Reading “Sugar Nation” and learning some great stuff about prediabetes. James King, M.D. and former president of the AAFP on prediabetes eating: “I tell diabetic patients to consume MORE carbohydrates- mainly from fruits and vegetables, not from simple sugars and starches- while decreasing the amount of meat and fat in the diet.” Blood sugar rises when carbs are broken down into glucose. Diabetics don’t use insulin correctly, which is the substance that lowers blood sugar, resulting in the trademark diabetic symptom: high blood sugar. So why feed diabetics more of what’s causing their problems (Carbs)? The irony is that he suggests eating less protein and fat. To keep calories adequate, you have to eat even MORE carbs. wut???!!

When asked about spacing meals throughout the day: “What we recommend when we start treating diabetes is that patients eat two meals a day, along with a smaller meal. Eat when you’re hungry, and eat the right foods when you do.”EAT WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY?When I’m hungry, I’m most prone to blow my diet. I’ll eat chips, cookies, or fast food just so I don’t feel hungry. If I were a diabetic, this would be detrimental to my health, so why does the AAFP suggest I wait till I’m hungry to eat? Wouldn’t stable meals throughout the day be more appropriate to keep me level-headed and my blood sugar at a steady state (without spikes and drops in blood sugar)?

Exercise and eat healthy. Diabetes can be controlled and PREVENTED through lifestyle alteration. Think of diabetes as a dietary disease.  But most insurance companies won’t cover nutritional counseling for prediabetics, despite prediabetes being the last chance to stall and PREVENT full blown diabetes. This is like fastening a seat belt after a crash. That there’s some counterintuition/backwards thinking.

1 carb= 4 calories/gram. Americans are recommended to eat 2,000 calories a day. According to the American Dietetic Association, dietitians working with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics should call for carbs to represent 45-65% of total energy intake. This is the same guideline used for healthy adults in the Dietary Reference Intakes. That’s 75-108 grams of carbs per meal. These numbers seem outrageous considering an oral glucose tolerance test (used to diagnose diabetes) has the patient drink a 75gram sugar solution. Bear in mind this 75 grams is designed to be an exceptional scenario, not an everyday occurrence. But diabetics are recommended 75-108 grams of carbs per meal every day? The implication is that whatever carb load works for someone with normal glucose metabolism should work equally well for someone whose body can’t handle the sugar that most carbs become after digestion i.e. a diabetic. that thinkingdon’t make no sense!!!

my ramblings . April 20, 2012

DERRICK ROSE: “I won’t ever put myself in a bad position so that people can say bad things about me,” Rose tells GQ. “I make smart decisions, and my friends and my family, they are all there for the right reason. I’m very mature for 23 years old, and I know that whatever I do can hurt someone.” Exactly the importance of developing professionalism! What you do can hurt others!! I’m developing it in the hospital and am trying to develop it in other aspects of my life, but I respect D-Rose because of his awareness on and off the court. He’s a role model in the way he carries himself.

Let’s make Hitler famous by wearing swastika bracelets and HITLER2012 shirts in a synagogue. Or KONY2012 shirts in honor of the people of Uganda. Let’s make flashy, High School Musical rip-offs!!! Let’s turn this into the cause of the week!

  • Her: I’m almost ashamed to say this was a cause I once supported when they first came about. Now however, I think they’re just making a mockery of the situation and the Ugandan people. I think instead of helping the Ugandan people they’re currently making situations worse and it’s truly unfortunate.

  • Me:
oh so very true. no need to be ashamed, though. In fact one could say this KONY2012 mess has helped some people, myself included, to create informed opinions before offering my money and support to a cause or organization. Certainly, the only conclusion many can come to is that we are not educated enough on the situation to lend our support as it can be more harmful than helpful.

And I totally agree with making a mockery of the situation and making the movement about themselves. The video should focus on the situation of the people not him, in my humble opinion.

I support the cause to help the people, not KONY2012. :)

I love hardcover books. They keep their aesthetic form and, unlike their softcover counterparts, don’t bring worries of ruining the binding because you opened it too wide. :D
